Visual Impairment
Vision impairment is defined as a limitation of one or more functions of the eye. The most common vision impairments affect: The sharpness or clarity of vision The normal range of what you can see.
Low tech: Optical Magnifier- is a small round or square piece of plastic or glass that when placed over a paper or book it allows the person to magnify the words and the pictures. the pro of this device is that a student is able to read or look at a picture with ease, and quickly without the assisitance of a parent or teacher. the con is that this device is small and the student is not able to magnify the entire page or picture but just a portion of it.
Mid tech: Audio books- these types of books are great for students who have a hard time reading small print they can put headphones in and listen to the story without struggling to try to read the text or story. the pro is that the audio books cancel out the frusation of not being able to read the text and listen to the story, the con is that it can be harder to have the stuent read by him or herself, and the teacher conduct a lesson at the same time.
High tech: A screen Magnifier- is great to allow student to use the computer, or a hand held device. this allows students to use the computer or hand held device with ease and allow them to particpate in the class activities using a computer or hand held device. the down side to this assistive technology is that the student can only use the one computer and it maybe be hard for another student to work together on a computer if the magnification is too much for the other students.
